A gravel vacuum is a siphon tube used during water changes to draw out water while lifting trapped waste from the substrate.
It lets you do two jobs at once: remove nitrate-laden water and clean debris out of the gravel. In sand tanks you hover just above the surface rather than digging in.
You do not need to deep-clean the whole substrate every time — rotating around the tank over several changes is gentler on the ecosystem.
