At least six, and more is better. Neons are shoaling fish — kept in ones, twos or threes they hide, lose colour and get stressed. A group of six is the minimum for them to feel secure; a larger shoal in a planted tank is where they truly shine. They also need a mature, soft-water tank, not a brand-new one.
🔢 Stocking & tankmates
The most common cause is adding them to a tank that isn't fully cycled and settled — neons are sensitive to an immature or unstable tank even when the water looks clear. Test the water, and only add neons to a mature, stable, soft-water aquarium. A temperature or parameter swing, or too small a group, can also stress them into decline.
