Slower growth is a feature — less trimming and far less that can go wrong.

Here’s the freeing truth: that’s the hard version of a hobby that has a genuinely easy version. Low-tech planted tanks are beautiful, cheap, forgiving, and better for your fish.

Why bother with live plants?

Plants aren’t just decoration — they earn their place:

  • They clean the water. Plants take up ammonia and nitrate directly, easing the load on your nitrogen cycle.
  • They fight algae. Healthy plants compete with algae for the same light and nutrients — the single best long-term algae control there is.
  • They calm the fish. Cover and planting make shy and shoaling fish feel secure, so they colour up and behave naturally.
  • They add oxygen and give fry and shrimp places to hide.

Growth is slower — and that’s the point: less trimming, less dosing, and far less that can go wrong.

Higher light and CO2 make plants grow fast, but they also shrink your margin for error (more light with unbalanced nutrients = algae). For a first tank, slow and forgiving wins.

Easy plants that are hard to kill

Start with these:

  • Java fern and anubias — attach to driftwood or rock (don’t bury the rhizome), tolerate low light, almost indestructible.
  • Java moss and other mosses — carpet-ish cover, great for shrimp and fry.
  • Cryptocorynes (“crypts”) — rooted plants that settle in and spread; may “melt” then regrow after planting (normal).
  • Floating plants (salvinia, frogbit, water lettuce) — fast-growing nutrient sponges that shade out algae and love beginners.

Light: less is more

Put the lights on a timer for 6–8 hours a day and keep the tank out of direct sunlight. That’s plenty for low-tech plants and it starves algae. If you’re getting algae, the first lever to pull is almost always less light, not more fertiliser.
