Constipation

Constipation in fish — often from too much dry food and not enough fibre — can cause bloating and swim-bladder trouble, and is usually eased by fasting and feeding foods like blanched, deshelled pea or daphnia.

It is especially common in round-bodied fish (fancy goldfish) and greedy eaters. A day or two of fasting followed by a fibre-rich food often resolves mild cases.

Persistent bloating that does not respond to diet may be something more serious (like internal disease or dropsy), so watch how it develops.
