Planted tank

Also called: live plants · aquascape

A planted tank uses live aquarium plants, which improve water quality by taking up nitrogen, give fish shelter and compete with algae — and beginner-friendly species make it easier than it looks.

Hardy plants like java fern, anubias and cryptocoryne tolerate low light and no added CO₂, making them a forgiving start. Plants are working members of the tank, not just decoration.

Live plants and a natural aquascape also reduce stress in fish by providing cover — a genuine welfare benefit as well as a visual one.
